  • Today Baba Andrew and Mama Audrey took Thandeka and I out for dinner at Spur. We ate wayyyyy too much. I have been staying at Thandeka's for the last few nights but told the Harms' I would be back today, so after dropping Thandeka off at her place, and picking up all of my things from there, Baba Andrew brought me home to the Harms'. But I had eaten wayyyy too much, cheese sauce and ice cream included. So when we got to the Harms', I had to use the bathroom SO BADLY I couldn't wait. Then the gate opening thing didn't work, and the Harms' weren't here. SO I went and did my business on the side of the road, between one of those electrical boxes and the neighbor's wall. And you know what kind of business it has to be to warrant doing it on the side of the road......and of course I also didn't have any toilet paper around.

K so then we miraculously got the gate to open (too late!) and came inside. It was great, but then a few seconds after we put down my things, an alarm went off! It stopped after a while but then when Andrew decided he could leave, it came back on. He didn't have airtime on his phone - we tried to call Major Harms from the house phone - it didn't work - Baba Andrew went to the nearby shop to get airtime (just about a dollar's worth, that's all he had) - he came back, we called Major Harms --- no answer. We called Thandeka to get Mama Harms' phone number. In the meantime, Major Harms sent us an sms saying he was in a meeting until 8:00 tonight. Eventually I convinced Baba Andrew that I could stay here, just not go in the hallway that seems to trip the alarm system. So far it appears that the alarm is not sending the police directly here, so that's a blessing. Because the off-limits hallway is the one near the toilet and shower rooms. So I'm standing in the kitchen feeling and smelling like the business I did between the electrical box and the neighbor's wall.

HAHAHAHA!!! :D This is the best vacation EVER!! :D

  • Well, I spent almost the whole day applying to work at Camp Homelani this summer....I just got the idea last night but I decided just to run with it since they have an online application! SOoooo I may be working in Hawaii this summer? We'll see about that. I would probably not even make enough money to cover the summer b/c I have to come back for Kristen's wedding, but it would definitely be an experience worth having. Everyone should feel free to follow my lead here.

I love this inauguration business, and I'm pretty sure I would love it even if it was a president I hated. It's just a very very cool thing. I love a party, and I love history and presidents, and this is ALL THREE IN ONE. A giant, historical, presidential PARTY. Um, awesome?! Yesterday there were perfectly-timed documentaries about MLK Jr and then the history of the White House...it was great. I wish I could live in the White House. SO BAD!   And let's not kid ourselves, Aretha's hat today was SWEET.

There is nothing more patriotic than a little soft-serve chocolate ice cream...

  • Well I don't have much to say but I thought I'd just say something anyway because we all keep talking about xanga but not actually updating it....haha!

Anyway life is pretty good...I'm enjoying it anyway!  Today a bunch of people talked to me online randomly and I have been feeling really good ever since. I had a photo shoot of myself to try to get something usable for my business cards, and I made some pancakes with that filling I get at Bob Evan's plus I made a chocolate-caramel sauce of which I am very proud. Also, last night I had a thought that maybe I could get myself started with a website, and get the fancy flash stuff working later. So I worked on that -- I just think it would be nice to have a website to put on my business cards and to have that "virtual address" so people can find me and be able to see my stuff and contact me, etc. For instance, someone at our family reunion asked me to take her family's photos, and I had to write my info on a little notecard...if I had a website she could've looked there to see my stuff, decide if she wanted me to be the one to do it, and have my contact information right there. Also, it would be pretty nice to have pricing set on there, so there could be less haggling. I'm terrible at haggling over prices; I would go down to $0 if I could! Anyway that's all random and unimportant stuff.

The weekend was great! It was fun to hang out and laugh and freeze our butts off! And I realized recently that I really just love nature, which is pretty great b/c I like to find out more and more hippie-ish things about myself. LOL! Anyway here are a few pictures:

  • I was recently thinking about rainboots, mostly because I got a new pair and I get really excited whenever I get to wear them and slosh around knowing my feet will stay dry. It's so good. Then I thought, well it's too bad I won't need these in South Africa, because summer rains are always the best, and it would be so fun to splash around in the warm rain. THEN I started thinking about the peculiarity of rain boots in the first place, I mean when you put them into the context of the whole world like that -- because in Africa (and of course I really only know about Kenya and Malawi), there's really no need for rain boots, because there's not enough rain for that. I wonder if I wore rain boots in Kenya or Malawi, would the people have understood what they were? I think it's crazy that we live in such a society of abundance and prosperity that we have to invent extra goods to take care of our extra "needs" that come from having so much... So now when I wear my rain boots, I thank God twice: once for having the luxury of dry, warm feet so I can enjoy the rain, and then once for the simple fact that I have a reason to need them, that rain that brings sustenance and prosperity in such a real way. Wow.

There's a carnival/party of some sort in our dorm this weekend, and I'm pretty sure that the poster for it is my new favorite poster ever - it advertises some of the activities going on, and then the food. The food they advertise? Popcorn, slushies, Chinese, Indian, Brazilian, and cotton candy. ?? What kind of a party is this?! Awesome.

oh p.s. I've changed the background and such to be less wintery. :)

  • Well, Spring Break was a big success - I think it might have been my favorite Spring Break since our 8th grade Hawaii vacation. But then I could be forgetting something huge...let me know if I did. Anyway, some pictures:

Anyway, what I really wanted to write about was that last night there was a guy (who does NOT live in our dorm building) in the staircase across from our room, drunk as a skunk and apparently just laying on the ground in the stairway. So some girls from our hall found him and asked him if he was okay and stuff - I don't really know what happened at the beginning actually, but when my roommate and I tuned in, DPS was there questioning him. And then two higher-up officers came and were asking him questions, which ended up being really hilarious because he was quite drunk and started ranting about Ronald Reagan when they told him he should go to the hospital.

Then he showed them his wallet and they discovered that he was not actually 21 as he had claimed; in fact he had two fake i.d.'s in his wallet - one from Michigan and one from California, but he was really from Maryland and born in '88. About this time, a fire truck and ambulance showed up outside the dorm, and in a few moments later, there were 3 or 4 MORE popo standing in that little staircase. These guys were pretty efficient though; they pretty much looked at him, asked him one question and then one guy said, "we're taking you downstairs and you're going to the hospital". Then the drunk guy started getting upset about this, and the man was like, "this is not a debate, we're taking you to the hospital", and in about 30 seconds they were gone. Then we saw them take him outside and put the guy into the ambulance in a stretcher. Intense!

So it was a really exciting night (this happened at about 2:00, so then Alli and I were too excited to sleep until  about 3:30)...and the DPS/Police Officers were really classy and I'm glad that guy got help because he obviously needed it, and the girls who found him seemed like they were genuinely concerned and stuck around to see he got help.

And all this we found out through eavesdropping through our door and peeping out the peephole!
